This weekend saw the last regular season game at home for the Mermigans verse Valkyries. Though with the Mermigans sitting top of the table with one more match all eyes are looking to a home semi final, but this is not yet secure. The top 3 teams sit with 55, 51 & 50 points and with us having one less game to play, mathematically it could all change but the course is firmly in the hands on the Mermigans.
So to Saturdays game….
Zurich are on the build back towards the top of a very competitive league this year with 4 teams clearly in with a shout of the title. They have a tough defence that never give up. You could clearly hear that in the team talks urging every player to hit the rucks, tackle hard and work for each other. This attitude rewarded them early in the second half when they were 20 points down with a try to get them off the mark and perform better than teams like Glasgow warriors who could not score a point against Leinster this week.
Defence alone does not win matches and points have to be scored in attack. With hard running coming from 15 and backed by the 3rd row of Mermigans it is hard to keep them from making an impact.
Lets hope they keep this going with the injuries to players that have now ended their 2024/25 season on the pitch and must watch from the sidelines, the depth and determination in the squad is starting to shine.
